The DMACC volleyball team went 2-2 while competing in the Heartland Tournament October 11 and 12 at Normal, Ill.
The Bears split matches on both days of the tournament. They topped Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC), 3-0, and lost to Parkland College (PC), 3-0, on Oct. 11 and beat Spoon River Community College (SRCC), 3-0, and lost to Heartland (Ill.) Community College (HCC), 3-0, on Oct. 12. PC and HCC are ranked fourth and sixth respectively in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll.
Sophomore Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had 19 kills and freshmen Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., and Lily Huizenga of Orange City reached double figures with 11 and 10 kills respectively in DMACC's 23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-13 win over LLCC. Brenizer hit .486 with her 19 kills coming from 35 attacks with two hitting errors. Clarke hit .286 with her 11 kills from 35 attacks with one hitting error and Huizenga hit .474 with her 10 kills coming from 19 attacks with one hitting error.
As a team, DMACC hit .395 with 52 kills from 119 attacks with five hitting errors.
Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls led the Bears in assists with 46 and sophomore Lexie Lane of Renwick contributed three ace serves. Freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls led four players in double figures with digs with 19. Sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn had 17, Lane came away with 16 and Clarke had 14. Freshman Emma Liechti topped DMACC in blocks with four, including three block assists. Brenizer had three blocks, including two block assists, and Clarke finished with three block assists.
Clarke and Liechti had seven kills apiece in the Bears' 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 loss to PC. DMACC hit .163 in the match, getting 26 kills from 92 attacks with 11 hitting errors.
Mahi came away with 21 assists and had four ace serves and seven digs. Jones led the Bears in digs with 17, Sandvold had 14 and Clarke added 13. Liechti led DMACC in blocks with six, including five block assists. Freshman Danica Wrage of Waterloo had five blocks, including four block assists, and Brenizer and Huizenga added four and three block assists respectively.
Brenizer and sophomore Aquarina Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., had 11 and 10 kills respectively as the Bears topped SRCC by set scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-15. Brenizer's 11 kills came from 26 attacks with two hitting errors for a .308 hitting percentage and Thomas got her 10 kills from 29 attacks with three hitting errors for a .241 hitting percentage. As a team, DMACC hit .245 with 37 kills from 106 attacks with 11 hitting errors.
Mahi again led the Bears in assists with 27, Brenizer had four ace serves and Jones added two. Jones topped DMACC in digs with 21 and Lane, Clarke and Sandvold added 17, 14 and 13 respectively. Wrage had three blocks, including two block assists, and Liechti added two block assists.
Brenizer came away with 11 kills and a .370 hitting percentage in DMACC's 25-17, 28-26, 25-15 loss to HCC. Brenizer got those 11 kills from 27 attacks with one hitting error. The Bears hit just .119 with 28 kills from 109 attacks with 15 hitting errors.
DMACC got 21 assists from Mahi and two ace serves by Jones. Jones and Sandvold came away with 23 and 13 digs respectively and Brenizer had four block assists. Liechti and Wrage finished with three block assists apiece.
