DMACC volleyball team top Marshalltown, 3-0

 

Sophomore Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had 11 kills and hit .611 in leading the DMACC volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) October 30 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears won by set scores of 25-6, 25-7, 25-18.

 

DMACC, ranked 25th in this week's division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), closed the regular season at 22-17 overall and 8-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). The Bears will be the No. 4 seed in the NJCAA Region 11 tournament that begins next week.

 

Brenizer got her 11 kills from 18 attacks with no attack errors as DMACC came away with a .375 hitting percentage in the win, getting 32 kills from 72 attacks with five attack errors. Freshmen Dania Wrage of Waterloo and Emma Liechti of Ankeny added seven and six kills respectively.

 

Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls led the Bears in assists with 24 and sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn led DMACC to 11 ace serves with three. Brenizer, Mahi, sophomore Aquarina Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., and freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls had two ace serves apiece.

 

Sandvold led the Bears in digs with 16 and Jones and Thomas came away with 13 and 10 respectively. Brenizer and Liechti topped the Bears in blocks with three apiece. Brenizer had three block assists and Liechti had two.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will face fifth-seeded Southeastern Community College (SECC) in the Region 11 quarterfinals Nov. 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears defeated the Blackhawks 3-1 when the two teams played Sept. 11 inside the DMACC gymnasium. SECC closed the regular season at 22-18 overall and 7-4 in the ICCAC.

 

The DMACC-SECC winner will play the winner of a match between top-seeded Kirkwood Community College (KCC) and eighth-seeded Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) in the Region 11 semifinals Nov. 9 at the home of the highest seeded team remaining in the tournament. The Bears dropped a 3-0 decision to KCC during their regular-season matchup and defeated ILCC, 3-1 in the regular season. KCC, 31-6 overall, won the ICCAC regular season championship with an 11-0 record. The Eagles are ranked third in the NJCAA Division II poll.

 

The Region 11 championship match will take place Nov. 10 at the home of the highest seeded team remaining in the tournament. The Region 11 champion will advance to the 2024 NJCAA Division 11 Volleyball Championship Nov. 20 to 23 at Cedar Rapids. Cowley, out of Kansas, is the defending Division II national champion.
