DMACC volleyball team splits four matches in Iowa Central Tournament
  • DMACC gets wins against Neosho County CC and Allen County CC
  • DMACC losses come against top-ranked Cowley County CC and No. 16 Kansas City (Kan.) CC
  • Bears host Indian Hills CC tonight

 

The DMACC volleyball team stands at 21-16 for the season after splitting four matches in the Iowa Central Tournament October 25 and 26 at Fort Dodge. The Bears had a win and a loss each day of the competition.

 

DMACC's two wins came against Neosho County Community College (NCCC) on Oct. 25 and Allen County Community College (ACCC) on Oct. 26. The Bears lost to Cowley County Community College (CCCC) on Oct. 25 and Kansas City (Kan.) Community College (KCKCC) on Oct. 26. CCCC is the top-ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll and KCKCC is ranked 16th.

 

Sophomore Aquarina Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., had five kills and sophomores Abbie Brenizer of Norwalk and Maggie Johnston of Boone and freshmen Lily Huizenga of Orange City and Danica Wrage of Waterloo came away with four apiece as the Bears dropped a 3-1 decision to CCCC, losing by set scores of 25-22, 16-25, 23-25, 13-25. DMACC came away with a .080 hitting percentage, getting 24 kills from 112 attacks with 15 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls and freshman Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown had 12 and 11 assists respectively and sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn led three players in double figures in digs with 20. Freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls had 16 digs and Mahi finished with 14. Thomas and freshman Emma Liechti of Ankeny led DMACC in blocks with five blocks and Brenizer had four. Liechti had five block assists and Thomas and Brenizer came away with four.

 

Brenizer had 16 kills and hit .560 in DMACC's 26-24, 25-23, 25-10 win over NCCC. Brenizer got her 16 kills from 25 attacks with two hitting errors. Liechti and Thomas added eight and five kills respectively as DMACC hit .276 with 38 kills from 98 attacks with 11 hitting errors. Liechti got her eight kills from 12 attacks with just one hitting error for a .583 hitting percentage.

 

Mahi led the Bears in assists with 32 and Jones and Sandvold had four and three ace serves respectively. Jones topped DMACC in digs with 18, Mahi added 16 and sophomore Lexie Lane of Renwick came away with 11. Brenizer had six blocks, including five block assists, and Thomas added four block assists.

 

KCKCC handed DMACC a 3-1 loss behind sets scores of 26-28, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21. Thomas and Liechti led the Bears in kills with 10 apiece and Brenizer and Huizenga had nine apiece. DMACC hit .193 with 46 kills from 150 attacks with 17 hitting errors.

 

Mahi came away with 32 assists and Jones and Sandvold contributed two ace serves apiece. Jones led five players in double figures in digs with 27. Sandvold had 20, Lane added 15 and Mahi and Thomas had 12 apiece. Liechti led the Bears in blocks with five, including four block assists, and Brenizer had three blocks, including two solo blocks.

 

Thomas, Brenizer and Huizenga reached double figures in kills as DMACC closed out tournament play with a 25-15, 21-25, 25-15, 26-24 win over ACCC. Thomas led DMACC with 18 kills, Brenizer had 15 and Huizenga added 14. The Bears hit .186 in the win with 61 kills from 210 attacks with 22 hitting errors.

 

Mahi led DMACC in assists with 45 and Jones topped the Bears in digs with 39. Lane came away with 31 digs, Sandvold had 26, Mahi finished with 21 and Thomas came away with 19. Liechti and Johnston led DMACC in blocks with 12 and 10 respectively. Both had nine block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will face Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) at 7 p.m. today inside the DMACC gymnasium. IHCC is 22-9 this season and the Warriors are ranked 19th in NJCAA Division I. They defeated DMACC 3-2 when the two teams played Aug. 29 at Ottumwa.
