DMACC volleyball team goes 2-1 in DMACC Invitational
  • DMACC upsets 12th-ranked Illinois Central College in its first match
  • Bears drop a 3-1 decision to Bismarck State College
  • DMACC closes tournament with 3-0 win over Lincoln Land CC

 

The DMACC volleyball team improved to 14-11 for the season after going 2-1 in the DMACC Invitational Oct. 4 and 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears' two wins were a 3-2 upset of Illinois Central College (ICC) on Oct. 4 and a 3-0 decision against Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) on Oct. 5. Sandwiched between those victories was a 3-1 loss to Bismarck State College (BSC), also on Oct. 5.

 

Sophomore Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk and freshman Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., had 13 kills apiece in DMACC's win over ICC, the No. 12 team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. Freshman Emma Liechti of Ankeny and sophomore Aquarina Thomas added 12 and 10 kills respectively as the Bears came away with the win by set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 15-12. DMACC hit .196 in the win, getting 54 kills from 163 attacks with 22 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls led DMACC in assists with 52 and sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn contributed three ace serves. Jones led five DMACC players in double figures in assists with 29. Freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls came away with 20, Clarke had 18 and sophomore Lexie Lane of Renwick and Mahi had 12 and 10 respectively.

 

Brenizer topped DMACC in blocks with four, including three block assists.

 

The Bears took the first set in their loss to BSC, 25-22 but dropped the next three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-8.

 

Liechti led DMACC in kills with 13 as the Bears hit just .105 in the loss. They had 37 kills from 133 attacks with 23 hitting errors.

 

Mahi finished with 24 assists and Sandvold had a pair of ace serves. Jones led the way in digs with 20 and Sandvold, Lane and Clarke had 14, 13 and 12 digs respectively. Brenizer topped the Bears in blocks with three block assists.

 

Brenizer and freshman Lily Huizenga of Orange City had nine kills apiece as DMACC came away with a 25-17, 25-14, 25-21 decision against LLCC. Brenizer hit .412 with her nine kills coming from 17 attacks with two hitting errors and Huizenga got her nine kills from 19 attacks with three hitting errors for a .316 percentage. As a team, DMACC hit .279 with 35 kills from 86 attacks and 11 hitting errors.

 

Mahi had a team-high 25 assists and Jones finished with four ace serves. The Bears got 12 digs apiece from Sandvold and Lane and Jones added 11. Brenizer and Liechti had four blocks apiece with Brenizer getting four block assists and Liechti getting two. Sophomore Maggie Johnston of Boone added three block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will meet Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) matchup Oct. 9 at Cedar Rapids. DMACC is 4-2 in the ICCAC. KCC, ranked third in the NJCAA Division II poll, is 19-5 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
