The DMACC volleyball team ran its record to 12-10 overall and 4-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after splitting two matches October 2 at Norfolk, Neb.
The Bears dropped their opening match to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) by set scores of 33-35, 23-25, 25-27 and rebounded with a 25-7, 25-5, 25-7 win over the York University Junior Varsity (YUJV).
Sophomores Aquarina Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., and Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had 12 and 10 kills respectively in DMACC's loss to NECC. Thomas hit .273 with her 12 kills coming from 33 attacks with three hitting errors. Brenizer got her 10 kills from 36 attacks with four hitting errors for a .167 hitting percentage. As a team, DMACC hit .180 with 45 kills from 161 attacks with 16 hitting errors.
Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls had 41 assists and sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn led four players in double figures in digs with 30. Sophomore Lexie Lane of Renwick and freshman Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., had 22 digs apiece and freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls finished with 18. Freshman Emma Liechti of Ankeny led the Bears in blocks with four, including two block assists. Freshman Dania Wrage of Waterloo had three blocks, including two block assists.
Clarke had seven kills and freshman Lily Huizenga of Orange City added five in DMACC's win over YUJV. The Bears hit .411 with 29 kills from 56 attacks with six hitting errors.
Mahi again led the Bears in assists with 16 and Sandvold contributed six ace serves. Freshman Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown had five ace serves and Mahi and Brenizer added three apiece.
Jones topped DMACC in digs with 10. Sandvold added nine, Clarke finished with seven and Brenizer had five. Liechti had four blocks, including two block assists.
The DMACC volleyball team will host the DMACC Invitational Oct. 4 and 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears will play Illinois Central College (ICC) and Bismarck State College on Oct. 4 and will face Lincoln Land Community College. (LLCC) on Oct. 5. ICC is ranked 12th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
