Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), ranked seventh nationally in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), handed the DMACC volleyball team a 3-0 loss September 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium, dropping the Bears to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
The Tritons won by set scores of 25-19, 25-10, 25-21, to improve to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the ICCAC. The win was the tenth straight for ICCC.
DMACC got six kills apiece from sophomores Aquarina Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., and Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk. Freshmen Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., Lily Huizenga of Orange City and Emma Liechti of Ankeny had five kills apiece as the Bears hit .119 in the loss. They finished with 29 kills from 118 attacks with 15 hitting errors.
Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls and freshman Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown had 12 and 11 assists respectively and Clarke and Anderson contributed one ace serve apiece.
Sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn led DMACC in digs with 22. Clarke finished with 15 and freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls had 10. Brenizer came away with four blocks, including three block assists, and Clarke had three block assists.
The DMACC volleyball team will play in the Parkland Tournament Sept. 20 and 21 at Champaign, Ill. The Bears will face Parkland College (PC) and Lake Michigan Community College (LMCC) on Sept. 20 and will play Morton College (MC) and Wabash Valley College (WBC) on Sept. 21. PC is ranked third in the NJCAA Division II poll.
