DMACC volleyball team splits matches against JCCC and LLCC

The DMACC volleyball team stands at 6-7 for the season after splitting matches against Johnson County Community College (JCCC) and Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) September 13 at Overland Park, Kan.

 

Freshman Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., had 15 kills in a 3-1 loss to JCCC and sophomore Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had eight kills in a 3-0 win over LLCC. JCCC,  ranked second in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), defeated the Bears by set scores of 25-14, 21-25, 27-25, 25-22. DMACC defeated LLCC, 25-14, 25-16, 25-21.

 

Brenizer and freshman Emma Liechti of Ankeny had seven kills apiece and freshmen Lily Huizenga of Orange City and Danica Wrage of Waterloo and sophomore Maggie Johnston of Boone added six, five and four kills respectively in the loss to JCCC. DMACC hit .174, getting 44 kills from 161 attacks with 16 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls and freshman Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown topped DMACC in assists with 21 and 13 respectively and Brenizer and freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls had two ace serves apiece.

 

Anderson led five players in double figures in digs with 30. Clarke came away with 25. Sandvold had 18, sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn finished with 15 and Mahi contributed 10. Brenizer led the Bears in blocks with six block assists and Leichti and Wrage had five block assists apiece.

 

DMACC hit .194 in beating LLCC, getting 35 kills from 103 attacks with 15 hitting errors. In addition to Brenizer's eight kills, the Bears got six apiece from Clarke and Huizenga, five from Wrage and four from Johnston and Liechti.

 

Anderson topped DMACC in assists with 15 and Mahi added 13. Brenizer, Mahi, Anderson and Sandvold had two ace serves apiece and Jones led the Bears in digs with 16. Clarke came away with 14 digs and Sandvold had 12. Wrage and Brenizer had seven and six block assists respectively and Liechti finished with five blocks, including four block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Sept. 18 when the Bears will host Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). DMACC is 2-0 in conference play. ICCC, ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II, is 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Tritons have won their last nine matches.
