DMACC volleyball team drops two matches in Kirkwood Tournament

The DMACC volleyball team fell to 4-6 for the season after losing to Heartland (Ill.) Community College (HCC) and Sauk Valley Community College (SVCC) in the Kirkwood Tournament September 7 at Cedar Rapids.

 

DMACC, ranked 19th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), fell to fourth-ranked HCC, 3-0, in its tournament opener and lost to fourteenth-ranked SVCC, 3-1, in the Bears' second match.

 

HCC defeated DMACC by set scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-20. Sophomore Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk led DMACC with nine kills. Freshman Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., had eight and sophomore Aquarina Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., came away with five. The Bears hit just .104 in the loss, getting 32 kills from 134 attacks with 18 hitting errors.

 

Freshman Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown and sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls led DMACC in assists with 15 and 10 respectively and Clarke and freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls had one ace serve apiece.

 

Sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn led the Bears in digs with 24 and Sandvold, Anderson and Clarke had 16, 14 and 13 respectively. Brenizer led DMACC in blocks with eight block assists and freshman Lily Huizenga of Orange City had four block assists.

 

SVCC defeated the Bears by set scores of 25-10, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18. Brenizer and Clarke led DMACC in kills with 10 apiece, Thomas had eight and freshman Emma Liechti of Ankeny finished with seven.

 

DMACC hit .158 with 37 kills from 139 attacks with 15 hitting errors.

 

Mahi led the Bears in assists with 20 and Anderson added 17 and they had three ace serves apiece with Brenizer contributing two ace serves.

 

Clarke paced DMACC in digs with 25, Jones added 15, Sandvold came away with 13 and Anderson finished with 10. Brenizer and freshman Danica Wrage of Waterloo had five block assists apiece.

 

The DMACC volleyball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Sept. 11 when the Bears host Southeastern Community College (SECC). DMACC is 1-0 in the ICCAC. SECC is 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the ICCAC.
