DMACC volleyball team takes two wins from William Penn JV
  • Lily Huizenga and Abbi Brenizer have 12 and 11 kills respectively in 3-1 win over WPUJC1
  • Huizenga has nine kills and Aquarina Thomas has seven in 3-0 win over WPUJV2

The DMACC volleyball team improved to 3-4 for the season with a pair of wins over the William Penn University Junior Varsity (WPUJV) Sept. 3 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Lily Huizenga of Orange City and sophomore Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had 12 and 11 kills respectively as the Bears defeated WPUJV1, 3-1. Set scores were 25-22, 25-9, 22-25, 25-12. Huizenga finished with nine kills and sophomore Aquarina Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., had seven in a 3-0 win over WPUJV2. Set scores were 25-12, 25-18, 25-18.

 

DMACC, ranked 19th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), hit .164 in winning the opener, collecting 41 kills from 122 attacks with 21 hitting errors. Freshman Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown and sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls led the Bears in assists with 14 and 12 respectively and Mahi and freshman Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., contributed three ace serves apiece.

 

Clarke and sophomore Lexie Lane of Renwick topped DMACC in digs with 18 apiece and freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls came away with 10. The Bears got six blocks from freshman Emma Liechti of Ankeny, including four block assists, and freshman Danica Wrage of Waterloo had five blocks, including four block assists.

 

DMACC hit just .128 in its win in the second match, getting 31 kills from 117 attacks with 16 hitting errors. Anderson led the Bears in assists with 12 and Sandvold had three ace serves. Anderson and sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn added two ace serves apiece.

 

Lane led four players in double figures in digs with 15 and Anderson, Jones and Sandvold had 13, 12 and 11 respectively. Liechti topped DMACC in blocks with five, including four block assists, and Wrage had four blocks, including three block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team opens Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play with a match against Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) today at Estherville. ILCC is 2-10 so far this season.
