DMACC volleyball team falls to IHCC in five sets, 3-2

Sophomore Abbie Brenizer of Norwalk had 11 kills and freshman Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., contributed eight kills and 15 digs as the DMACC volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) August 27 at Ottumwa.

 

The loss sent the Bears to 1-4 for the season. Three of those losses and DMACC's lone win have come in five-set matches and two of the losses were against ranked teams. DMACC, ranked 11th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, fell to fourth-ranked Pensacola State College, 3-2, Aug. 23 in the Opening Weekend Tournament and IHCC is ranked ninth in NJCAA Division I. The Bears' lone win was a 3-2 decision against Kalamazoo Community College (KCC) in the Opening Weekend Tournament.

 

IHCC earned its win by set scores of 25-15, 25-12, 24-26, 23-25, 15-5.

 

Brenizer's 11 kills came from a .308 hitting percentage. She had 26 total attacks with 3 hitting errors.

 

As a team, DMACC hit .157 with 39 kills from 127 attacks and 19 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls and freshman Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown topped the Bears in assists with 20 and 15 respectively and freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls contributed a pair of ace serves.

 

Sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn and Anderson joined Clarke in double figures in digs with 12 and 10 respectively and Brenizer led DMACC in blocks with four block assists. Freshmen Danica Wrage of Waterloo and Emma Liechti of Ankeny had three blocks apiece with each getting two block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will open the home season Sept. 3 against the William Penn University Junior Varsity. Match time is 5 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium
