DMACC volleyball team tops NIACC in Region XI quarterfinals, 3-0

  • Sophomore Coryl Matheny leads DMACC with 10 kills
  • Sophomore Emma Flathers has 22 assists and 12 digs
  • Bears will face Ellsworth Community College in the semifinals

 

Sophomore Coryl Matheny of Glenwood had 10 kills and hit .391 to lead the DMACC volleyball team to a 3-0 win over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in the quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Division II Volleyball Tournament Nov. 1 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Set scores were 25-14, 25-11, 25-19.

 

The win sends the top-seeded Bears to the semifinals where they will face fourth-seeded Ellsworth Community College (ECC).

 

Matheny got her 10 kills from 23 attacks with just one hitting error. Freshman Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had eight kills and hit .389 and sophomore Kylie Henry of Urbana came away with seven kills and a .357 hitting percentage. As a team, DMACC, ranked 11th in this week's Division II poll from the NJCAA, hit .313 in defeating the Trojans for the second time this season. The Bears had 34 kills from 96 attacks with just four hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Emma Flathers of Treynor had 22 assists and 12 digs and sophomore Maddie Dunham of Nevada contributed five ace serves. Sophomore Kenya Prescott of Carroll topped DMACC in digs with 20 and Brenizer finished with three block assists. Henry had two blocks, including one block assists.

 

The Region XI semifinals will be held Nov. 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears will face ECC at 1 p.m. and second-seeded Kirkwood Community College (KCC) will meet third-seeded Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) at 3 p.m. The semifinal winners will meet in the championship match Nov. 5 at 1 p. m., also inside the DMACC gymnasium with the winner advancing the NJCAA Division II National Championship Nov. 15 to 18 at Cedar Rapids.

 

DMACC defeated ECC 3-0 during the regular season and split matches with KCC and ICCC. The Bears defeated KCC 3-0 and dropped a 3-1 decision to ICCC. KCC is ranked fourth nationally and ICCC is ranked ninth.
