DMACC volleyball team drops 3-2 decision to Indian Hills

 

The DMACC volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-2 loss to Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) October 30 at Ottumwa. Set scores were 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 11-25, 4-15.

 

The loss was the ninth of the season against 26 wins for the Bears, who are ranked 11th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). IHCC is ranked 19th in NJCAA Division I.

 

DMACC was led by sophomore Monica Mirembe of Ankeny. Mirembe had 11 kills and hit .647, getting those kills from 17 attacks with no hitting errors. Sophomore Coryl Matheny of Glenwood had nine kills and sophomore Kylie Henry of Urbana came away with seven. The Bears hit .230 in the loss, getting 37 kills from 113 attacks with 11 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Emma Flathers of Treynor led DMACC in assists with 34 and sophomore Kenya Prescott of Carroll contributed two ace serves and 14 digs. Matheny topped the Bears in digs with 15 and Flathers added nine. Freshman Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had six blocks, including five block assists, and Henry had five blocks, including three solo blocks.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will be the No. 1 seed in the NJCAA Region XI Volleyball Tournament which begins Nov. 1. The Bears will host North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) at 7 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium in the first round of the tournament. The Trojans, the No. 8 seed, are 14-23 overall and 3-8 in the ICCAC. Their losses include a 3-0 setback to DMACC Aug. 30 at Mason City.

 

Semifinal matches will be played Nov. 4 at the home of the highest seeded team remaining in the tournament and the championship match will be played Nov. 5 at the site of the semifinal matches.

 

The Region XI champion will advance to the national tournament Nov, 15 to 18 at Cedar Rapids.
