DMACC volleyball team splits four matches in Parkland Tourney
  • DMACC faced ranked opponents in all four matches
  • Bears lost to the fifth- and tenth-ranked teams
  • DMACC swept the second- and 14th-ranked opponents

 

The DMACC volleyball team came away with a 2-2 record in the Parkland Tournament Sept. 29 and 20 at Champaign, Ill.

 

The Bears, ranked 16th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), lost to fifth-ranked Parkland College (PC) and No. 10 Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) on Sept. 29 and defeated second-ranked Owens Community College (OCC) and No. 14 Madison Community College (MCC) on Sept. 30. PC, LLCC and MCC are NJCAA Division II programs and OCC is a Division III program. PC climbed to No. 4 in this week's poll, LLCC is ninth and MCC fell to 17th. OCC remained the second-ranked team in the Division III poll.

 

Sophomore Zophi Hendricks of Defiance had 11 kills and sophomore Coryl Matheny of Glenwood added eight as DMACC dropped a 25-20, 17-25, 22-25, 11-25 decision to PC in the Bears' opening match of the tournament.  Sophomore Monica Mirembe of Ankeny had six kills for the Bears and sophomore Kylie Henry of Urbana added five as DMACC hit .218 in the loss. The Bears came away with 37 kills from 124 attacks with nine hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Emma Flathers of Treynor topped DMACC in assists with 33 and sophomore Kenya Prescott of Carroll had two ace serves and led the Bears in digs with 18. Matheny finished with 13 digs and sophomore Maddie Dunham of Nevada had 12. Freshman Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk led the way in blocks with five block assists.

 

Hendricks had 14 kills and Matheny and sophomore Eden Wilson of Conrad came away with 13 apiece in a 22-25, 28-26, 20-25, 25-23, 11-15 loss to LLCC. DMACC hit .291, getting 59 kills from 158 attacks with 13 hitting errors.

 

Flanders again led the Bears in assists with 58 and freshman Lexie Lane of Renwick had a pair of ace serves. Prescott topped DMACC in digs with 28 and Matheny and Flathers had 25 and 12 respectively. Mirembe led the Bears in blocks with four, including three block assists.

 

Seven kills from Matheny and five each from Hendricks and Wilson led the Bears to a 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 win over OCC. DMACC hit .180 with its 28 kills coming from 89 attacks with 12 hitting errors.

 

Flathers finished with 25 assists and had three ace serves as did sophomore Jerica Heintz of Polk City. Prescott and Matheny came away with 15 and 10 digs respectively.

 

Matheny had 11 kills and Wilson added 10 in a 25-22, 25-13, 25-19 win over MCC. Matheny hit .550 in the win, getting her 11 kills from 20 attacks with no hitting errors. As a team, the Bears hit .330 with 37 kills from 100 attacks with four hitting errors.

 

Flathers finished with 34 assists and Matheny and Heintz had four and two ace serves respectively. Prescott topped DMACC in digs with 18 and Matheny had 15. Mirembe finished with three blocks, including two solo blocks.

 

The DMACC volleyball team, 5-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) faces Hawkeye Community College (HCC) Oct. 4 at Waterloo. The Red Tails, ranked 20th in NJCAA Division II, are 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the ICCAC.
