DMACC volleyball team tops NECC in Regio XI semifinals, 3-2

  • DMACC will face Kirkwood CC in the Region XI-B championship match

 

Freshman Coryl Matheny of Glenwood had 24 kills and 20 digs to lead the DMACC volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI-B semifinals Oct. 29 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Sara Hansen of Hudson came away with 61 assists and freshmen Eden Wilson of Conrad, Zophi Hendricks of Defiance and Monica Mirembe of Ankeny had 18, 13 and 11 kills respectively as the Bears improved to 22-14 for the season with a 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 23-25, 15-12 win.

 

DMACC, the Region XI A/B tournament's No. 3 seed, will face second-seeded Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in the Region IX-B championship match tonight at Cedar Rapids. KCC took a 3-1 decision from the Bears when the two teams played Oct. 5 at Cedar Rapids.

 

DMACC hit .322 in the win over NECC. The Bears got 70 kills from 171 attacks with 15 hitting errors.

 

Freshman Kenya Prescott of Carroll came away with 20 digs in the win, Hansen had 15 digs and sophomore Erin Bathe of Ames had 15 digs and two ace serves. Mirembe topped the Bears in blocks with five block assists and Hansen had three.

 

The Region XI-B winner will advance to district play or to the NJACC Division II Volleyball Championships depending on the outcome of the Region XI-A tournament. Top-seeded Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) faces fourth-seeded Hawkeye Community College (HCC) in the Region XI-A championship match tonight at Fort Dodge.
