DMACC volleyball team drops 3-1 decision to Kirkwood CC

 

The DMACC volleyball team fell to 17-10 overall and 4-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) following a 3-1 loss to Kirkwood Community College Oct. 5 at Cedar Rapids.

 

DMACC, ranked 16th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), opened the match with a 25-16 win but the ninth-ranked Eagles answered with victories in the next three sets, winning by scores of 25-8, 25-17 and 31-29.

 

Freshman Zophi Hendricks of Defiance led the Bears with 12 kills and freshman Eden Wilson of Conrad added 11. DMACC hit .151 in the loss, getting 42 kills from 172 attacks with 16 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Sara Hansen of Hudson topped the Bears in assists with 35 and freshman Kenya Prescott of Carroll led the way in digs with 35. Freshman Jerica Heintz of Polk City and sophomore Erin Bathie of Ames had 15 digs apiece, freshman Maddie Dunham of Nevada finished with 14 and Hansen and Hendrick contributed 10 apiece. Freshmen Kylie Henry of Urbana and Monica Mirembe of Ankeny had three block assists apiece.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will play in the NIACC Tournament Oct. 7 at Mason City. The Bears will face ICCAC rival Ellsworth Community College (ECC) and Rock Valley Community College (RVCC) in the tournament. ECC has an 8-12 record this season, including a 1-4 mark in the conference. RVCC is 23-9 including a 3-1 win over the Bears in the DMACC Invitational Sept. 30 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Golden Eagles are not ranked by have received votes in the NJCAA Division II poll.
