DMACC volleyball team wins three of four matches in DMACC Invitational

The DMACC volleyball team put together a 3-1 record in four matches in the DMACC Invitational Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears, ranked 12th in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), opened with a 3-1 loss to Rock Valley Community College (RVCC) and then defeated Rochester Technical and Community College (RCTC), 3-2. On Oct. 1 DMACC recorded 3-1 wins against Metropolitan (Kan.) Community College (MCC) and John Wood Community College (JWCC).

 

The Bears ran their record to 17-9 for the season.

 

Freshman Maddie Dunham of Nevada had 10 kills and sophomore Sara Hansen of Hudson and freshman Eden Wilson of Conrad added eight and seven kills respectively as DMACC dropped a 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18 decision to RVCC in its tournament opener. The Bears hit .172 in the loss, getting 38 kills from 128 attacks with 16 hitting errors.

 

Hansen led DMACC in assists with 26 and Dunham had two ace serve to go with her 10 kills. Sophomore Erin Bathie of Ames led DMACC in digs with 13 and Hansen came  away with 10. Freshman Kylie Henry of Urbana had four block assists and freshmen Zophi Hendricks of Defiance and Monica Mirembe of Ankeny added three block assists apiece.

 

Mirembe's 15 kills, 14 from Hendricks and 10 by Dunham lifted DMACC to a 25-22, 27-29, 19-25, 25-23, 15-1 win over RCTC. The Bears hit .243 in the win, getting 56 kills from 185 attacks with 11 hitting errors.

 

Hansen topped DMACC in assists with 44 and Dunham had three ace serves. Hansen led five players in double figures in digs with 18. Freshman Emma Flathers of Treynor had 14, freshman Kenya Prescott of Carroll added 13 and Dunham and freshman Jerica Heintz of Polk City finished with 11 apiece. Mirembe had five blocks in the win, including four block assists.

 

Wilson had 12 kills and Dunham and Hendricks added 10 apiece as DMACC defeated MCC 22-25, 25-21, 25-9, 25-14. The Bears hit .222 in the win, coming away with 52 kills from 153 attacks with 18 hitting errors.

 

Hansen again led DMACC in assists with 40, Dunham and Bathie had three ace serves apiece and Hansen and Prescott had two apiece. Hansen and Prescott finished with 12 digs apiece and Heintz added 11. Henry had five blocks, including four block assists, and Hansen finished with four block assists.

 

Hansen had 12 kills, 22 assists and 17 digs as the Bears handed JWCC a 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21 loss in DMACC's final match of the tournament. Dunham had eight kills and Hendricks and Wilson added seven apiece as the Bears hit .196 in the win, getting 42 kills from 148 attacks with 13 hitting errors.

 

Flathers had six ace serves and Henry added two and Dunham and Heintz finished with 14 digs apiece with Prescott getting 13.

 

DMACC returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Oct. 5 when the Bears face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) at Cedar Rapids. DMACC is 4-1 in the ICCAC. KCC, ranked ninth in the NJCAA Division II poll, is 23-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
