DMACC volleyball team goes 3-1 in Cowley Invitational

 

The DMACC volleyball team ran its record to 14-7 after winning three of four matches in the Cowley Invitational September 23 and 24 at Arkansas City, Kan.

 

The Bears, ranked 19th in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) split two matches on Sept. 23, defeating Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEOAM), 3-0, and losing to second-ranked Cowley County Community College (CCCC), 0-3. DMACC won both of its matches on Sept. 24, beating Central (Neb.) Community College (CNCC), 3-0, and Metropolitan (Kan.) Community College (MCC), 3-0.

 

Freshman Eden Wilson of Conrad had 13 kills and freshman Zophi Hendricks of Defiance came away with eight in DMACC's 25-10, 25-22, 25-16 win over NEOAM. The Bear hit .330 in the win, getting 37 kills from 91 attacks with seven hitting errors.

 

Freshman Emma Flathers of Treynor finished with 32 assists and two ace serves and freshman Kenya Prescott of Carroll and sophomore Erin Bathie of Ames had 15 and 11 digs respectively. Freshman Kylie Henry of Urbana had six blocks, including five block assists.

 

Wilson had nine kills and Hendricks added seven as CCCC took a 25-20, 25-20, 25-15 decision from the Bears. DMACC hit .219 in the loss, getting 27 kills from 96 attacks with six hitting errors.

 

Flathers led the Bears in assists with 23 and added 13 digs. Prescott topped DMACC in digs with 21.

 

Wilson and Hendricks finished with 17 and 16 kills respectively to lead the Bears past CNCC, 12-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-19. DMACC hit .206 in the win, coming away with 55 kills from 175 attacks with 19 hitting errors.

 

Flathers topped the Bears in assists with 50 and Prescott had 32 digs to go with two ace serves. Bathie added 17 digs and Flathers finished with 12. Freshman Monica Mirembe of Ankeny led the Bears in block assists with four and Wilson and Henry had three apiece.

 

Wilson had 12 kills, Hendricks finished with eight and Henry and freshman Maddie Dunham of Nevada added seven apiece in DMACC's 25-16, 25-15, 25-14 win over MCC. The Bears finished with a .406 hitting percentage, getting 43 kills from 96 attacks with just four hitting errors.

 

Flathers again topped DMACC in assists with 37 and Prescott had two ace serves and a team-high 14 digs. Freshman Jerica Heintz of Polk City contributed two ace serves and 10 digs and Wilson and Henry had four block assists apiece.

 

Wilson, Flathers and Prescott were named to the all-tournament team announced at the conclusion of play.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will put its 4-0 record in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) on the line Sept. 28 when the Bears host Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). The Tritons, ranked second in NJCAA Division II, are also 4-0 in conference play and 17-4 overall. Match time is 7 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium.
