DMACC volleyball team goes 1-3 in Parkland Classic
  • Bears begin tournament with a 3-1 upset of McHenry County College
  • DMACC drops matches to Parkland College, Heartland CC and Lincoln Land CC
  • DMACC is ranked 19th in this week's NJCAA Division II poll

 

The DMACC volleyball team came away with a 1-3 record after four matches in the Parkland Classic September 16 and 17 at Champaign, Ill. The Bears, who are ranked 19th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), began the tournament with a 3-1 upset of McHenry County College (MCC) on Sept. 16. DMACC then dropped a 3-0 decision to Parkland College (PC) and on Sept. 17 lost decisions to Heartland Community College (HCC). 0-3, and to Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC), 1-3.

 

PC is currently ranked third in the NJCAA Division II poll. HCC is sixth and MCC has received votes after being ranked 12th in last week's poll.

 

The Bears are now 10-6 for the season.

 

Freshman Zophi Hendricks of Defiance had 12 kills and freshman Eden Wilson of Conrad added 11 in the Bears' 17-25, 25-23,  25-21, 25-23 win over MCC. DMACC hit .254 in the match, getting 44 kills from 114 attacks with 15 hitting errors.

 

Freshman Emma Flathers of Treynor dished out a team-high 34 assists and freshman Kylie Henry of Urbana contributed two ace serves. Freshman Kenya Prescott of Carroll had a team-high 22 digs and Flathers added 11. Freshman Haylee Hidlebugh of Adel had four block assists and Henry also came away with four blocks, including three block assists.

Hendricks and Wilson had four kills apiece and Flathers and freshman Monica Mirembe of Ankeny added three apiece in DMACC's 20-25, 17-25, 14-25 loss to PC. Flathers led the Bears in assists with 13 and Prescott topped DMACC in digs with 16.

 

Hendricks finished with eight kills as the Bears dropped a 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 decision to HCC in their first match on Sept. 17. Flathers came away with 20 assists and Prescott and sophomore Erin Bathie of Ames had 21 and 14 digs respectively.

 

Wilson and Henry had nine kills apiece, Hendricks finished with eight and Mirembe had seven as the Bears fell to LLCC, 25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 22-25. DMACC hit .209 in the loss, getting 43 kills from 134 attacks with 15 hitting errors.

 

Flathers had 37 assists in the match and freshman Maddie Dunham of Nevada, Flathers and Prescott had 20, 19 and 16 digs respectively. Hidlebugh and Henry had three block assists apiece.

 

The DMACC volleyball team, 3-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), will face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Sept. 21 at Mason City. The Trojans are 5-13 overall and 2-1 in the ICCAC.
