DMACC volleyball team upsets 11th-ranked Hawkeye CC, 3-2

 

Freshman Eden Wilson of Conrad had 17 kills and freshman Zophi Hendricks of Defiance came away with 12 to lead the DMACC volleyball team to a 3-2 upset win over Hawkeye Community College (HCC) September 14 at Waterloo.

 

HCC came into the match ranked 11th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).


The Bears won by set scores of 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11 to improve to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). DMACC extended its winning streak to five consecutive matches.

 

The Bears hit . 223 in the win, getting 59 kills from 215 attacks with 11 hitting errors. Freshman Monica Mirembe of Ankeny finished with nine kills and sophomore Sara Hansen of Hudson added seven.

 

Hansen led DMACC in assists with 48 and freshman Kenya Prescott of Carroll topped the Bears in digs with 34. Freshman Maddie Dunham of Nevada had 23 digs, sophomore Erin Bathie of Ames added 20, Hansen finished with 19 and freshman Jerica Heintz of Polk City had 18. Hansen led DMACC in blocks with five block assists, freshman Kylie Henry of Urbana had four blocks, including three block assists and freshman Haylee Hidlebugh of Adel added three block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will play in the Parkland Classic Sept. 16 and 17 at Champaign, Ill. The Bears will face McHenry Community College (MCC) and Parkland College (PC) on Sept. 16 and will play Heartland Community College (HCC) and Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) on Sept. 17. PC, HCC and MCC are ranked third, eighth and 12th in NJCAA Division II.
