DMACC volleyball team splits four matches in McHenry Tournament

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) volleyball team came away with a 2-2 record after opening the 2019 season in the McHenry Tournament August 23 and 24 at Rockford, Ill.

 

The Bears opened tournament play with a 3-2 win over Carl Sandburg College (CSC) on Aug. 23 and then dropped a 3-0 decision to Parkland College (PC), the No. 2-ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, also on Aug. 23.

 

On Aug. 24, DMACC defeated Harper College (HC), ranked eighth in NJCAA Division III, 3-0, and then lost its final match of the tournament to Glen Oaks Community College (GOCC), 3-2.

 

Sophomore Amber Dilsaver of Fort Madison had 15 kills to lead the Bears to an 11-25, 29-27, 25-20, 20-25, 16-14 win over CSC. Sophomore Kyra Ikeda of Cedar Rapids finished with 12 kills and freshman Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., contributed 11.

 

DMACC hit .186 in the win, getting 54 kills from 167 attacks with 23 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Cailey Schaa of Council Bluffs led the Bears in assists with 48 and freshman Dakota Miles of Dallas Center topped DMACC in digs with 34. Kelley contributed 16 digs, freshman Jordan Neely of Tiffin had 14 and Ikeda finished with 13.

Freshman Katelyn Courtney of Ames led DMACC in blocks with six, including five solo blocks, and Dilsaver added four block assists.

 

Ikeda had five kills and Dilsaver and Kelley contributed three apiece in DMACC's 13-25, 8-25, 18-25 loss to PC. Schaa led the way in assists with 11 and Kelley finished with a team-high 12 digs. Ikeda had nine digs, Neely added seven and Schaa came away with five. Courtney finished with four blocks, including three block assists, and Dilsaver had three block assists.

 

Dilsaver's 13 kills and nine by Courtney lifted the Bears to a 25-18, 25-22, 25-16 win over HC. The Bears had their best hitting match of the tournament at .214, getting 41 kills from 131 attacks with 13 hitting errors.

 

Schaa again led DMACC in assists with 35, Kelley had three ace serves and freshman Darian Gray of Mechanicsville added two and Miles topped the Bears in digs with 22. Kelley finished with 16 digs, Gray had 13 and Ikeda added 11. Dilsaver topped the Bears in blocks with four, including three block assists.

 

Dilsaver and Courtney had 14 kills apiece as DMACC closed out tournament play with a 18-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20, 7-15 loss to GOCC. The Bears hit .128, getting 48 kills from 187 attacks with 24 hitting errors.

 

Schaa finished with 43 assists, Dilsaver added three ace serves and Miles contributed 24 digs and two ace serves. Kelley and Neely had 22 and 20 digs respectively and Courtney finished with nine solo blocks.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will face Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) Aug. 28 at Ottumwa. IHCC, an NJCAA Division I program, is 3-0 on the season.
