DMACC women's golf team finishes third in the NJCAA Plains District Championship
  • Sophomore Ashley Michel finishes sixth and qualifies for the national championship for second consecutive year
  • Freshmen Meg Thompson and Kaylin Petrak tie for 13th and 17th respectively
  • Sophomore Dani Nolde and freshman Erin Winker are 33rd and 36th respectively

Sophomore Ashley Michel qualified for the national championship for the second consecutive year and led the DMACC women's golf team to a third-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Plains District Championship April 24 and 25 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.

Michel shot rounds of 74 and 80 for a 36-hole score of 154 in finishing sixth, eight strokes behind medalist Baylie Pike of IWCC. That finish was good enough to send her to the NJCAA DI Women's Golf Championship for the second consecutive year. She tied for 33rd in the 2022 tournament.

The Bears posted team scores of 326 and 337 for a two-day total of 663 in finishing third, three strokes ahead of Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) rival Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). DMACC was in fourth place and four strokes behind ICCC after the first days but moved into third after shooting seven strokes better than the Tritons in the second round.

Barton County Community College (BCCC) won the team championship with a 36-hole score of 613 and Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) finished second at 618. BCCC and IWCC both qualified for the national championship and DMACC could receive an at-large invitation to the tournament. That decision will be made April 28 by the NJCAA.

Other DMACC results in the Plains District Championship saw freshman Meg Thompson of Greene tie for 13th place and freshman Kaylin Petrak of Grimes tied for 17th. Sophomore Dani Nolde of Ogallala, Neb., was 33rd and freshman Erin Winker of Carroll finished in 36th place.

Thompson shot rounds of 81 and 83 for a 164 total, Petrak was at 166 on rounds of 84 and 82 and Nolde's 33rd-place finish came on rounds of 87 and 93 for a 36-hole total of 180. Winker posted a pair of 92s to finish at 184.

The NJCAA DI Women's Golf Championship will be played May 9 to 12 at Garden City, Kan.
