Four members of DMACC women's basketball team earn all-region honors

Four members of the DMACC women's basketball team, sophomores Mary Walker of Fonda and Joy Beran of Riceville and freshmen Whitney Jensen of Remsen and Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids were named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) All-Region Women's basketball Teams announced March 6 by the ICCAC.

 

Walker earned first team honors, Beran was named to the second team and Jensen and Clayburg were third-team honorees.

 

Walker led the Bears in scoring with 509 points and a 17-point average. She shot 35 percent from the field, hitting 172 of 486 field goal attempts. Walker was 24-of-99 from three-point range for 24 percent and made 91 of 123 free throw attempts for 74 percent. Walker finished fourth in the ICCAC in scoring average.

 

Walker finished the season with 143 rebounds, including 92 defensive rebounds, and averaged 4.5 rebounds a game. Her season also included 56 assists, 49 steals and five blocked shots.

 

Beran finished the season with 291 points and a 9.4 average. She shot 40 percent from the field, making 102 field goals from 254 attempts. Beran was 12-of-47 from three-point range for 26 percent and made 75 of 99 free throw attempts for 76 percent.

 

Beran was DMACC's top rebounder with 231 rebounds, including 133 defensive rebounds, and a 7.5 average. Her season also included 52 assists, 35 steals and seven blocked shots. Beran was ninth in the ICCAC in rebounds per game average.

 

Jensen scored 312 points and averaged 10.1 points a game. She shot 37 percent from the field, hitting 109 of 294 field goal attempts. Jensen was 41-of-117 from three-point range for 35 percent and drained 53 of 76 free throw attempts for 70 percent.

 

Jensen pulled down 153 rebounds, including 101 defensive rebounds, and averaged 4.1 rebounds a game. Her season also included 71 assists, 63 steals and 40 blocked shots.

 

Clayburg scored 175 points and averaged 6.3 points a game. She made 80 of 185 field goal attempts for 43 percent and was 2-of-8 from three-point range for 25 percent. Clayburg connected on 13 of 22 free throw attempts for 59 percent.

 

Clayburg finished the season with 197 rebounds, including 121 defensive rebounds and averaged 4.1 rebounds a game. Her season also included 30 assists, 39 steals and three blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team was 21-10 for the season, including a 12-6 mark in the ICCAC, good for a tie for fourth place. The season was highlighted by an eight-game winning streak, beginning with a 94-50 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) and continuing through a 62-38 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) on Feb. 19. The Bears lost their last two games, a 71-50 decision to ICCAC regular-season champion Kirkwood Community College (KCC) and a 62-58 decision to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in the semifinals of the Region 11-A Women's Basketball Championship.
