Freshman Chloe Costello of Northwood and sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda scored 18 and 16 points respectively to lead the DMACC women's basketball team to a 63-38 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) February 19 at Estherville.
The Bears, who swept their season series against the Lakers, used a 16-0 run in the third quarter to improve to 21-7 overall and 12-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their eighth consecutive victory.
DMACC led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter and 29-19 at halftime. ILCC, which fell to 12-16 and 6-10, opened the third period with eight unanswered points to close to 29-27 with seven minutes to play in the period but DMACC had an answer. Freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin hit a jumper, giving the Bears a 31-27 lead, and igniting a 16-0 run that saw them open up a 45-27 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Costello scored 10 of the 16 points on a pair of three-pointers, a regular basket and two free throws and freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen had four points on two free throws and a regular basket.
DMACC actually padded the run with a 5-2 spurt to begin the fourth quarter for a 50-29 advantage with just more than seven minutes remaining in the game. The Bears enjoyed a 25-point lead in the closing minutes and settled for that 25-point margin at the final horn.
DMACC shot 41 percent, making 23 od 56 field goal attempts. The Bears hit eight of 15 shots from beyond the arc and were 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
ILCC connected on 16 of 48 field goal attempts for 33 percent, including 3-of-13 from three-point range. The Lakers made three of four free throw attempts.
Jensen pulled down 11 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 34-24 advantage on the boards. She also topped the Bears in assists with two and in steals with seven.
The DMACC women's basketball team will make its final road trip of the regular season Feb. 22 when the Bears travel to Mason City to face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC). The Trojans are 21-6 overall and 11-5 in the ICCAC. Their losses include an 81-61 decision against DMACC Jan. 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
