Sophomores Mary Walker of Fonda and Joy Beran of Riceville scored 19 and 10 points respectively to lead the DMACC women's basketball team to a 59-41 win over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) February 11 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
The Bears never trailed in sweeping their series against the Tigers and improving to 19-7 overall and 10-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their sixth consecutive victory.
Beran's two free throws with the game just more than two minutes old broke a 2-2 tie and began a 15-3 run that concluded with DMACC holding a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bears led by as many as 18 points in the second period before settling for a 34-22 advantage at halftime and coasted to the win in the second half, taking a 53-33 lead into the fourth quarter and leading by as many as 23 points in the closing minutes.
DMACC shot just 29 percent from the field, hitting 19 of 65 field goal attempts, including 9-of-33 from three-point range. The Bears were 12-of-14 from the free throw line.
MCC, which fell to 13-13 and 4-11, was 17-of-62 from the field for 27 percent. The Tigers made four of 23 attempts from beyond the arc and were 3-of-9 from the free throw line.
MCC came away with a 48-46 advantage on the boards with freshman Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids pulling down nine rebounds to lead DMACC. Beran added seven rebounds and led the Bears in assists with four. Walker topped the Bears in steals with four and freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen had five blocked shots.
The DMACC women's basketball team will face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) Feb. 15. Game time is 1 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Reivers are 14-12 overall and 7-7 in the ICCAC. Their wins included a 66-4 decision against the Bears Jan. 15 at Council Bluffs.
