Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda scored 21 points to lead the DMACC women's basketball team to an 80-64 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) February 8 at Iowa Falls.
Sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville scored 15 points and freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin reached double figures with 10 points as the Bears improved to 18-7 overall and 9-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their fifth consecutive victory and a season sweep against the Panthers.
DMACC trailed 17-16 at the end of the first quarter and 39-37 at halftime before taking control of the game in the third quarter when they outscored the Panthers 26-11 for a 63-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bears shot 44 percent, making 25 of 54 field goal attempts. They were 9-of-20 from three-point range and 23-of-26 from the free throw line.
ECC, which fell to 20-4 and 11-3, shot 37 percent on 23 field goals from 62 attempts. The Panthers were 3-of-19 from three-point range and 15-of-20 from the free throw line.
Despite the loss, ECC retained its grip on second place in the ICCAC. Two of the Panthers' three conference losses and two of their overall losses have come at the hands of DMACC, which came away with a 97-48 win Jan. 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium. ECC was ranked 17th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll at the time of that game.
Walker also led DMACC in rebounds with six as the two teams fought to a 28-28 tie in rebounding. Freshman Missy Evezic of Council Bluffs had five rebounds and Beran added four.
Freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen led the Bears in assists with three and also came away with two blocked shots.
The DMACC women's basketball team will be home to Marshalltown Community College (MCC) on Feb. 11. Game time is 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Beas defeated the Tigers 80-55 when the two teams played Jan. 11 at Marshalltown.
