Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda scored 25 points and freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen added 20 as the DMACC women's basketball team handed Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) a 70-55 loss February 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
With the win, DMACC improved to 17-7 overall and 8-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), good for third place in the league standings. Kirkwood Community College (KCC) tops the standings at 13-0 and Ellsworth Community College (ECC) is second with an 11-2 record.
The win also gave DMACC a sweep of its season series against the Tritons.
ICCC, which fell to 6-18 and 1-13, had a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter but DMACC outscored the Tritons 17-7 in the second quarter for a 30-23 lead at halftime. The Bears were up 44-34 at the end of the third quarter.
DMACC, which has won four consecutive games, shot 30 percent in the win, making 26 of 86 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-44 from three-point range and 8-of-13 from the free throw line.
ICCC made 21 of 46 field goal attempts for 46 percent shooting. The Tritons made five of 13 attempts from beyond the arc and went 8-of-9 from the free throw line.
ICCC came away with a 46-37 advantage on the boards with freshman Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids pulling down 11 rebounds to lead DMACC. Jensen had six rebounds and Walker and freshman Hanna Wagenbach of Burlington had four apiece. Jensen and freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin led the Bears in assists with four apiece and Walker and Jensen led the way in steals with three apiece.
The DMACC women's basketball team will face ECC Feb. 8 at Iowa Falls. The Panthers are 20-3 overall and their losses include a 97-48 defeat at the hands of DMACC Jan. 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium. ECC was ranked 17th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll at the time and has since dropped out of the rankings but is receiving votes.
