DMACC women's basketball team gets wins over SWCC and Graceland College JV

The DMACC women's basketball team ran its record to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with wins over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) and the Graceland College Junior Varsity (GCJV) January 25 and 26 respectively.

 

Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda scored 23 points in a 94-50 win over SWCC inside the DMACC gymnasium and freshman Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls had a team-high 16 points in a 90-59 win over GCJV at Lamoni.

 

DMACC never trailed against SWCC after a pair of free throws from sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville gave the Bears an 8-7 lead with 5 minutes, 48 seconds to play in the first quarter. DMACC went on to push its advantage to as many as seven points, including a 21-14 lead at the end of the quarter.

 

DMACC enjoyed a 10-point advantage at 26-16 behind a three-point basket from freshman Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., four minutes into the second period and the Bears closed out the period with a 23-4 run that gave them a 49-20 lead at halftime.

 

SWCC went scoreless through the first 4:42 of the third quarter as DMACC built its lead to 58-20 and the Bears had a 40-point lead, 72-32, heading into the fourth quarter.

 

Freshmen Chloe Costello of Northwood and Missy Evizic of Council Bluffs joined Walker in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively.

 

DMACC, which swept the season series with the Spartans, shot 40 percent from the field, hitting 31 of 78 field goal attempts. The Bears were 11-of-36 from three-point range and 21-of-28 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC had a 60-39 advantage on the boards with Evezic getting 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin dished out seven assists and Walker topped the Bears in steals with three.

 

Costello, Walker, Evizic and freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen joined Wheeler in double figures in the win over GCJV. Costello scored 14 points, Walker and Evezic had 12 apiece and Jensen came away with 10 points.

 

DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears were ahead 22-5 at the end of the first quarter, 36-22 at halftime and 57-35 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 51 percent from the field, making 38 of 75 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-15 from three-point range and 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

 

Beran had 11 rebounds and Wheeler recorded a double-double with 10 as DMACC came away with a 57-28 advantage on the boards. Dunn, Stratton and Beran had seven, six and five assists respectively and Walker topped the Bears in steals with three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) Jan. 28 at Columbus, Neb.
