Freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen scored 16 points and freshman Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds as the DMACC women's basketball team began the new year with an 81-61 upset of North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) January 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
The Bears improved to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with the win. NIACC, ranked 15th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, fell to 12-4 and 3-3.
Sophomores Joy Beran of Riceville and Mary Walker of Fonda also reached double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively and freshman Chloe Costello of Northwood came away with nine points with freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin adding eight points.
DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears were up 16-11 at the end of the first quarter and used a 29-14 advantage in the second half for a 45-25 lead at halftime. They had a 64-47 lead at the end of three quarters.
DMACC shot 37 percent from the field, hitting 32 of 87 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-27 from three-point range and 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Clayburg's 11 rebounds lifted DMACC to a 54-44 advantage in rebounding. Jensen narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds and Beran also had nine rebounds. Jensen and Walker led the Bears in assists with five and four respectively.
The DMACC women's basketball team will face Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Jan. 8 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m. ILCC, coached by former DMACC assistant coach Ashley Martin, is 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the ICCAC.
