The DMACC women's basketball team ran its winning streak to four games and improved to 5-1 for season with a pair of wins in the DMACC Tournament November 22 and 23 inside DMACC gymnasium.
Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda scored 17 points to lead the Bears to an 85-57 win over Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) on Nov. 22 and Walker and freshman Chloe Costello of Northwood had 15 points apiece in a 91-31 win over the Midland University Junior Varsity (MUJV) on Nov. 23.
DMACC led throughout the game in defeating RCTC, the No, 1-ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll. DMACC, which has received votes in the NJCAA Division II poll, had an 18-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and was up 46-30 at halftime. The Bears led 62-44 after three quarters.
Freshmen Whitney Jensen of Remsen came away with 15 points and freshmen Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin, Hanna Wagenbach of Burlington and Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids scored 10 points apiece.
The Bears shot 37 percent from the field, hitting 30 of 82 field goal attempts. They were 13-of-34 from three-point range and 12-of-18 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Joy Beran of Cresco grabbed 14 rebounds to lead DMACC to a 52-44 advantage on the boards. Clayburg topped the Bears in assists with four and Stratton and Walker added three apiece. Beran also led DMACC in steals with three.
The Bears had a 26-7 lead at the end of the first quarter in their win over MUJV and held a 51-12 lead at halftime. They were up 78-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Beran and freshman Reese Stevens of Tulsa, Okla., joined Walker and Costello in double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively.
DMACC shot 51 percent from the field, making 39 of 76 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-25 from three-point range and 5-of-10 from the free throw line.
DMACC came away with a 43-27 advantage in rebounding with Beran and Stevens grabbing six rebounds apiece to lead the way. Freshman Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., had five rebounds and Stratton and freshman Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls finished with four apiece. Stratton and Wheeler led the Bears in assists with four apiece and Jensen had a team-high four steals.
The DMACC women's basketball team will play Black Hawk-Moline Community College (BHMCC) Nov. 26 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
