DMACC women's basketball team splits two games in Kirkwood Classic

The DMACC women's basketball team stands at 2-1 for the season after splitting a pair of games in the Kirkwood Classic November 8 and 9 at Cedar Rapids.

 

Walker had 25 points in a 69-61 loss to Illinois Central College (ICC) on Nov. 8 and tallied 20 points in a 69-40 win over Sauk Valley Community College (SVCC) on Nov. 9.

 

DMACC, ranked 25th in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), trailed 19-12 at the end of the first quarter and 35-22 at halftime in its loss to ICC. The Bears outscored ICC 22-11 in the third quarter to close to within two at 46-44 but were outscored 23-17 in the fourth period as ICC came away with the win. DMACC tied the game twice in the last period, the last at 59-59 with 2 minutes, 45 seconds to play, but the Bears failed to score for nearly two minutes and the Cougars pulled away to a 67-59 advantage with 34 seconds remaining.

 

Sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville joined Walker in double figures with 15 points as the Bears shot 36 percent in the loss, hitting 22 of 61 field goal attempts. They were 7-of-20 from three-point range and 10-of-14 at the free throw line.

 

ICC had a 36-34 advantage in rebounding with Walker leading DMACC with eight rebounds. Freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin had seven rebounds and added four assists and five steals. Walker also had four assists and came away with three steals.

 

Freshmen Chloe Costello of Northwood, Whitney Jensen of Remsen and Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., joined Walker in double figures with 12, 11 and 10 points respectively in DMACC's win over SVCC.

 

The Bears had a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 21-17 advantage at halftime. They outscored the Skyhawks 23-10 in the third period and 25-13 in the fourth period to come away with the win.

 

DMACC shot 33 percent, making 26 of 78 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-31 from three-point range and 7-of-10 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with 45 rebounds with Beran getting eight and Jensen and freshman Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls getting six apiece. Dunn and Stratton had five and three assists respectively and Costello led DMACC in steals with four.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play the St. Ambrose University Junior Varsity Nov. 15 at Davenport
