Sophomore Reanna Hutchinson of Eau Claire, Wis., scored a team-high 36 points as the DMACC women's basketball team dropped a 95-90 decision to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) February 28 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Sophomores Jaden Ainley of Clear Lake and Rebekah Fuller of Bondurant and freshman Mary Walker of Fonda also scored in double figures as the Bears closed the regular season at 20-10 overall and 15-5 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
Ainley scored 20 points, Walker had 19 and Fuller scored 11 to go with 10 rebounds, giving her a double-double
Hutchinson helped DMACC to 41 percent shooting in the game with 14 field goals in 27 attempts. She was 5-of-12 from three-point range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Walker went 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
The loss cost DMACC the No. 3 seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 2024 Region XI-A Women's Basketball Championship that begins March 2. The Bears completed conference play in a tie for third place with NIACC and the Trojans are the No. 3 seed. DMACC is seeded fourth.
NIACC opened up a 23-18 advantage at the end of the first quarter and retained the lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Trojans led at halftime, 43-36, and were up 66-61 at the end of the third quarter. DMACC stayed within range throughout the fourth quarter and even took a one-point lead late in the game but NIACC always had an answer and put the game away in the final minute.
The Bears got their 41 percent shooting percentage from 30 field goals in 74 attempts. They were 11-of-26 from three-point range and 19-of-24 at the free throw line.
NIACC shot 50 percent in coming away with the win, hitting 35 of 70 field goal attempts. The Trojans were 12-of-26 from three-point range and 13-of-25 from the free throw line.
DMACC had a 47-32 advantage in rebounding, led by Fuller and sophomore Hallie Mohr of Mediapolis pulling down 10 rebounds each. Ainley had eight rebounds and freshman Joy Beran of Riceville finished with seven. Sophomore Kennedy Jones of Oak Park, Ill., led the Bears in assists with nine and Hutchinson topped the Bears in steals with two.
DMACC will play Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in the semifinals of the Region XI-A tournament March 2 at 1 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Tritons, seeded fifth, closed the regular season at 20-8 overall and 12-8 in the ICCAC. Two of their losses came against DMACC, 80-66 Dec. 13 at Fort Dodge and 81-69 Feb. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
The DMACC-ICCC winner will play the winner of the Kirkwood Community College (KCC)-Ellsworth Community College (ECC) matchup March 4 at the home of the higher seed. KCC, the No. 1 seed, swept DMACC, ICCC and ECC during the regular season.
The Region XI-A champion will advance to the NJCAA 2024 Division II Women's Basketball Championship March 18 to 23 at Joplin, Mo.
