DMACC women's basketball team tops SWCC, 87-75

Sophomores Jaden Ainley of Clear Lake, Rebekah Fuller of Bondurant, Reanna Hutchinson of Eau Claire, Wis., and Hallie Mohr of Mediapolis combined for 70 points as the DMACC women's basketball team handed Southwestern Community College (SWCC) an 87-75 loss February 14 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Ainley led the way with 25 points, Fuller and Hutchinson came away with 20 and 15 points respectively and Mohr had 10 points as the Bears improved to 19-7 overall and 14-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their eighth straight victory and their 13th win in their last 14 games.

 

DMACC, which swept its season series against the Spartans, is one game behind Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) and Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in the ICCAC standings and has road games against both teams over the next 10 days. North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) is fourth in league play at 11-5.

 

DMACC, ranked 18th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), had a 17-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Spartans 25-19 in the second period for a 42-35 lead at halftime. The Bears used another six-point advantage in the third period, 23-17, for a 65-52 lead at the end of the third quarter.

 

Ainley, who made 10 of 16 field goal attempts, including 5-of-6 from three-point range, helped the Bears to 50 percent shooting from the field. They made 30 of 60 field goal attempts, including 9-of-20 from three-point range, and were 18-of-22 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Joy Beran of Riceville pulled down 11 rebounds to go with six points as DMACC came away with a 40-25 advantage on the boards. Fuller had seven rebounds and Ainley, Hutchinson and Mohr had five rebounds apiece. Freshman Eviyon Richardson of Waterloo led the Bears in assists with six and freshman Mary Walker of Fonda added five. Hutchinson topped DMACC in steals with three and Fuller had a pair of blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) Feb. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Tritons are 18-6 overall and 10-6 in the ICCAC. DMACC came away with an 80-66 win when the two teams played Dec. 13 at Fort Dodge.
