Smith's 17 points lead DMACC women's basketball team past ECC

 

Freshman Jadeyn Smith of Arcadia led four players in double figures with 17 points as the DMACC women's basketball team began the new year with a 67-44 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) January 5 at Iowa Falls.

 

Freshmen Reagan Franzen of Polk City and Payton Tahahwah of Tama scored 13 points apiece and freshman Ashanti Lee of Houston, Texas, had 10 points as the Bears improved to 10-5 overall and 2-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears had a 14-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, a 30-15 advantage at halftime and a 47-26 lead at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 36 percent in the win, hitting 24 of 66 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-25 from three-point range and 11-of-15 from the free throw line.

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Camry Jones of Okoboji grabbed 13 rebounds and Smith and CoFR Emily Caspers of Swaledale had nine apiece as DMACC came away with a 49-47 advantage on the boards. Franzen and Tahahwah led DMACC in assists with six and four respectively and also had three steals apiece, as did Jones.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Jan. 8 at Creston. The Spartans are 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the ICCAC.
