DMACC women's basketball team picks up wins over Highland CC and Graceland University JV

The DMACC women's basketball team improved to 4-1 for the season with wins over Highland Community College (HCC) and the Graceland University junior varsity (GUJV) November 13 and 14.

 

The Bears defeated HCC, 61-49, November 13 at Highland, Kan., and handed GUJV a 94-35 loss Nov. 14 at Lamoni. The wins were the second and third straight for the Bears.

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Magan Christopherson of Milford scored a team-high 14 points and freshmen Payton Tahahwah of Tama and Shakara Robertson of Cocoa, Fla., tallied 12 and 11 points respectively in DMACC's win over HCC. The Bears led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, 28-23 at halftime and 43-27 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 40 percent in the win, hitting 21 of 53 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-21 from three-point range and 11-of-19 from the free throw line. Robertson drained three of her five three-point attempts and Christopherson was 2-of-7 from beyond the arc and made four of five free throw attempts.

 

CoFR Emily Caspers of Swaledale pulled down 11 rebounds to lead DMACC to a 41-32 advantage on the boards. CoFR Lexi Branning of Manning had eight rebounds and freshman Reagan Franzen of Polk City added seven. Christopherson and Tahahwah dished out four assists apiece and Tahahwah and Franzen had three steals apiece. Branning recorded two blocked shots.

 

Tahahwah's 19 points led four players in double figures in DMACC's win over GUJV. Christopherson finished with 16 points, Caspers scored 14 and freshman Jadeyn Smith of Arcadia had 11 as the Bears opened up a 26-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and coasted to the win. DMACC led 51-25 at halftime and 76-27 at the end of the third quarter.

 

The Bears shot 50 percent from the field, making 40 of 80 field goal attempts. They were 8-of-33 from three-point range and 6-of-12 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Karisma Wright of Des Moines came away with seven rebounds as DMACC finished with a 49-46 advantage on the boards. Franzen, Robertson and Branning had six rebounds apiece and Caspers finished with five.  Christopherson led the Bears in assists with eight, Robertson added five and Tahahwah had four. Smith led DMACC in steals with seven and Franzen added four.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team is home to the Grand View University junior varsity on Nov. 18. Game time is 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium.
