DMACC women's basketball team splits two games in Central Classic

The DMACC women's basketball team came away with a 1-1 record in the Central Classic November 4 and 5 at Columbus, Neb. The Bears opened the tournament with an 88-74 win over Southeast (Neb.) Community College (SECC) on Nov.4 and then suffered a 67-58 setback against Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) on Nov. 5.

 

Covid-19 freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford scored 25 points, freshman Payton Tahahwah of Tama added 20 and CoFR Emily Caspers of Swaledale scored 13 in the Bears' win over SECC. DMACC led 31-11 at the end of the first quarter, 49-35 at halftime and 67-54 after three quarters.

 

DMACC shot 54 percent in the win, connecting on 33 of 61 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-23 from three-point range and made 12 of 21 free throw attempts. Tahahwah connected on four of six attempts from beyond the arc and Christopherson went 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

 

Caspers and freshman Reagan Franzen of Polk City grabbed eight rebounds apiece as DMACC came away with a 47-39 advantage on the boards. Christopherson, Tahahwah and freshman Karisma Wright of Des Moines had five rebounds apiece. Christopherson dished out a team-high six assists, Franzen had five and Tahahwah and freshman Shakara Robertson of Cocoa, Fla., had three apiece.

Caspers had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the Bears' loss to CCC. DMACC led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter but was outscored 22-6 in the second quarter as CCC opened up a 35-23 advantage at halftime. The Raiders had a 51-38 lead at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 32 percent in the loss, making just 22 of 69 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-24 from three-point range and 9-of-17 from the free throw line.

 

CCC had a 46-39 advantage in rebounding with Franzen and CoFR Lexi Branning of Manning collecting eight rebounds apiece to go with Caspers' 10 rebounds. Wright had six rebounds and Tahahwah came away with five. Christopherson led DMACC in assists with seven and Franzen added four. Christopherson and Robertson had four steals apiece and CoFR Camry Jones of Okoboji had three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team takes a 1-1 record into its home opener Nov. 10 against the William Penn University junior varsity (WPUJV) Game time is 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium.
