Horn gets 18 as DMACC women's basketball team tops SWCC, 86-77

Sophomore Ellie Horn of Newton scored 18 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team defeated Southwestern Community College (SWCC), 86-77, February 6 at Creston.

 

Sophomores Grace Stalzer of Zearing, Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo and Emma Rouse of Boone reached double figures with 17, 16 and 13 points respectively and freshman Shailece Porter of Walthill, Neb., tallied 10 points as the Bears improved to 11-11 for the season and 6-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC overcame a 35-27 halftime deficit in getting the win. The Bears led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter and used a 29-16 run in the third period to lead 56-51 heading into the fourth quarter.

 

DMACC shot 46 percent in the win, hit 32 of 70 field goal attempts. The Bears were 9-of-25 from three-point range and made 13 of 18 free throw attempts.

 

Stalzer recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 44-39 advantage on the boards. Freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., had seven rebounds and Robinson and freshman Sameria Jackson of Houston, Texas, had five apiece. Robinson dished out nine assists in the win with Mena getting five and both had two steals apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Feb. 9 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 1 p.m. ECC is 0-23 on the season and 0-10 in the ICCAC. DMACC defeated the Panthers 88-59 when the two teams played Jan. 19 at Iowa Falls.
