Mitchell's Double-Double Lifts DMACC Women Past SWCC, 71-55

Sophomore Molly Mitchell of Okoboji recorded another double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team defeated Southwestern Community College (SWCC), 71-55, January 24 at Creston.

 

Sophomore Regan Shockley of Hartley tallied 12 points as the Bears improved to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their fourth consecutive victory.

 

DMACC, ranked 20th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), trailed 25-16 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Spartans 18-2 in the second period to take a 34-27 lead at halftime. The Bears were ahead 52-41 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 48 percent in the win, connecting on 26 of 54 field goal attempts, including 7-of-20 from three-point range. The Bears were 12-of-15 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with a 40-36 advantage on the boards behind Mitchell's 13 rebounds. Freshman Deja Davis of Omaha, Neb., had seven rebounds to go with nine points and sophomore Beth Atwood of Packwood and freshman Grace Stalzer of Zearing grabbed six rebounds apiece. Sophomore Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids led the Bears in assists with seven and Mitchell led the way in steals with three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), Jan. 27. Game time is 1 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. NIACC, the 10th ranked team in NJCAA Division II, is 16-4 overall and 3-1 in the ICCAC.
