DMACC’S Beth Atwood Named ICCAC Athlete of the Week

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) sophomore Beth Atwood the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II women's basketball for the week of January 15 to 21.

 

This the second time Atwood has earned the honor and she is the second DMACC women's basketball player to receive it. She also received the honor for the week of Oct. 30 to Nov. 5. DMACC sophomore Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids was honored twice, Nov. 27 to Dec. 3 and Dec. 11 to 17.

 

Atwood, who is from Packwood, scored eight points in DMACC's 57-55 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) on Jan. 17 and then recorded her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds as DMACC upset Southeastern Community College (SECC), 73-61, on Jan. 20. SECC came into the game ranked 15th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll.

 

Atwood is averaging 9.6 points and 8.1 rebounds a game for the Bears, who are 15-4 overall and tied for first place in the ICCAC at 3-0. She is shooting 56 percent from the field, having made 61 of 109 field goal attempts. Atwood is 5-of-12 from three-point range (42 percent) and has made 56 of 68 free throw attempts for 82 percent. She has scored 183 points this season.

 

Atwood, who is averaging 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds a game in conference play, is second on the team in rebounding with 154 rebounds, including 101 defensive rebounds. She also has 23 assists, 20 steals and one blocked shot this season.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team faces Southwestern Community College (SWCC) today at Creston. The Spartans are 6-10 overall and 0-3 in the ICCAC.
