- DMACC closes out the regular season with six games this week
The DMACC softball team, ranked seventh in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), ran its record to 44-5 overall and 20-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after sweeping doubleheaders from Hawkeye Community College (HCC) and No. 14 Kirkwood Community College (KCC) April 18 and 19 at the DMACC softball diamond.
The Bears handed HCC 11-3 and 6-1 losses on April 18 and defeated KCC by scores of 8-7 and 8-0 April 19.
Sophomore Hilary Wilson of Solon had a pair of doubles and drove in four runs to lead the Bears past HCC in the opener on April 18. The Bears led throughout the game, 3-1 after the first inning, 4-0 after the second inning, 7-0 after three innings and 10-2 after four innings. The game was called because of the mercy rule after DMACC scored in the bottom of the fifth.
Wilson and freshman Ella Husak of Polk City, Macee Reilling of Dallas Center and Jasey Anderson of Estherville paced the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including a double by Reilling and a home run from Anderson, who drove in two runs. DMACC also got a solo home run from freshman Bre Tigges of Urbandale.
Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee pitched the first four innings and came away with the win. She allowed two runs on three hits, struck out eight and walked one. Sophomore Ellie Flanagan of Coggon pitched one inning and allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
Tigges hit another home run and Reilling and freshman Erin Ades of Boone added doubles in the Bears' win in the second game. DMACC led 1-0 after the first inning and broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the third. The Bears closed out the win with three runs in the sixth.
Husak led DMACC at the plate with three hits and Tigges and Reilling had two hits apiece. Tigges, Ades and Reilling each drove in two runs.
Freshman Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater went the distance for the win. She allowed one run on five hits, struck out one and walked two.
DMACC needed a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh and a run-scoring single from Reilling in the bottom of the eighth to come away with the win in the opener against KCC.
The Eagles scored single runs in each of the first four innings for a 4-0 lead before DMACC made it a 4-2 game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. KCC went up 6-2 with two runs in the fifth and led 6-3 after DMACC scored a run in the bottom of the sixth. KCC scored another run in the top of the seventh for a 7-3 lead before DMACC rallied in the bottom of the inning.
Wilson led the Bears at the plate with three hits and Tigges, Reilling and freshman Mo Purdy of Des Moines had two hits apiece. Extra-base hits included a double by Ades, triples from Anderson and Tigges and a home run by Purdy.
Freshman Jacki Baas of Bondurant pitched the first six and a third innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Blomgren went two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run with one strikeout and three walks. The win went to Baumgardner who pitched the top of the eighth and retired all three batters she faced.
Tigges belted a home run and drove in five runs in DMACC's win in the second game. The Bears led all the way, 2-0 after the first inning, 6-0 after two innings and 7-0 after four innings. The game was called by the mercy rule after the Bears tallied their final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Husak led DMACC at the plate with three singles and Tigges and Reilling had two hits apiece.
The win went to freshman Kierra Jungers of Fonda, who improved to 20-1 behind a four-hitter. She struck out six and walked three.
The DMACC softball team closes out the regular season with doubleheaders against Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) April 22 at Norfolk, Neb., Ellsworth Community College (ECC) April 26 at Iowa Falls and Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 27 at Estherville. The Bears swept doubleheaders from all three teams earlier this season.
The DMACC-NECC game was originally scheduled for April 23 but has been moved to the 22nd because of weather issues.
DMACC, seeking its first ICCAC regular-season championship since 2021-22, has a two-game lead over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in the ICCAC standings and is five games ahead of KCC.
