Freshmen Jacki Baas of Bondurant and Kierra Jungers of Fonda improved to 15-1 and 19-1 respectively as the DMACC softball team swept a doubleheader from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) April 16 at the DMACC softball diamond.
Baas threw a four-hitter as the Bears took the opener, 9-1, in five innings and Jungers allowed three runs and three hits over six innings as DMACC won the nightcap, 6-3.
The Bears, ranked seventh in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 40-5 overall and maintained their lead in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) at 16-2.
Freshman Bre Tigges of Urbandale homered and drove in two runs and freshmen Macee Reilling of Dallas Center and Jasey Anderson of Estherville had two RBIs apiece for DMACC in the opener. The Bears trailed 1-0 after two innings but responded with two runs in the third and seven in the fourth. The game was called because of the mercy rule after NIACC batted in the top of the fifth.
Tigges and Anderson led DMACC with two hits apiece including a triple by Anderson, and freshman Ella Husak of Polk City added a double.
Baas allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Husak, the leading hitter in the ICCAC, went 3-for-4 and Tigges and sophomore Hilary Wilson of Solon had two hits apiece for the Bears in the second game. DMACC never trailed, leading 3-0 after two innings, 4-2 after three innings and 6-2 after four innings. NIACC scored two runs in the third and one in the seventh.
DMACC extra-base hits included doubles from Wilson, Reilling, Tigges and sophomore Josie McCuddin of Truro.
Jungers went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee pitched the seventh inning and allowed one hit with two strikeouts.
The DMACC softball team will face Hawkeye Community College (HCC) in a doubleheader April 18 at the DMACC softball diamond and Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in doubleheaders April 19, also at the DMACC softball diamond. HCC is 10-35 overall and 1-17 in the ICCAC. The Redtails' losses include a doubleheader loss against DMACC April 12 at Waterloo. KCC, ranked 14th in the NJCAA Division II poll, is 36-12 and 13-5. DMACC swept a doubleheader against the Eagles April 3 at Cedar Rapids.
