Seventh-ranked DMACC softball team sweeps No. 12 KCC

A pair of freshmen, Kierra Jungers of Fonda and Jacki Baas of Bondurant, pitched the DMACC softball team to a pair of wins over Kirkwood Community College (KCC) April 3 at Cedar Rapids.

 

The Bears, ranked seventh in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), defeated the No. 12 Eagles by scores of 5-2 and 8-4 to improve to 30-3 for the season, 6-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) and ran their winning streak to 16 games.

 

DMACC has a one-game lead over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in the conference standings and Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) is two games back at 4-2.

 

Jungers stayed unbeaten at 15-0 with the win in the first game. She went four and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Baas threw the final two and a third innings and retired all seven batters she faced, including two by strikeouts.

DMACC never trailed in the win. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth and added an insurance run in the seventh. KCC, which fell to 26-10 and 3-3, scored its two runs in the third and fifth innings.

 

Freshmen Erin Ades of Boone and Macee Reilling of Dallas Center provided most of DMACC's offense with three hits apiece, including a solo home run from Ades and a pair of doubles from Reilling, who drove in two runs.

 

Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee pitched the first three innings of the nightcap, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Baas went the last four innings and improved to 10-1 with the win. She allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four batters.

 

The Bears led 3-0 after three innings, 4-2 after four innings and closed out the win with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. KCC got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

 

Sophomore Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf led DMACC at the plate, collecting three hits, including a double and a triple, and driving in two runs. Freshmen Mo Purdy of Des Moines and Jasey Anderson of Estherville also doubled in the win and Purdy drove in two runs. The Bears also got solo home runs from Reilling and sophomore Josie McCuddin of Truro.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in a doubleheader today at the DMACC softball diamond and will host Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in a doubleheader April 6, also at the DMACC softball diamond. NECC is 14-17 overall and 2-4 in the ICCAC. ICCC is 23-4 overall in addition to its 4-2 record in conference play.
