DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from Southwestern
  • Sophomore Macy Blomgren tosses a one-hitter in an 8-0 win in the opener
  • Freshman Kierra Jungers throws a two-hitter in a 6-0 win in the nightcap
  • DMACC is 11-0 against NJCAA Division I programs

Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee and freshman Kierra Jungers pitched the DMACC softball team to a pair of wins against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) March 26 at Creston.

Blomgren threw a one-hitter in an 8-0 win in the first game and Jungers allowed just two hits as the Bears took the nightcap, 6-0. The first game was called because of the mercy rule after six innings.

DMACC, ranked seventh in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 24-3 with the two wins and ran its current winning streak to 10 games.

SWCC is an NJCAA Division I program and the two wins give the Bears an 11-0 record against NJCAA Division I programs this season. Several of those wins have come in via the mercy rule.

Blomgren improved to 3-0 with her win. She threw all six innings and struck out 11 batters.

Sophomores Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf and Hilary Wilson of Solon paced the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including a double by Caffery and a home run from Wilson, who drove in four runs. Freshman Macee Reilling drove in two runs and Caffery had an RBI.

DMACC took a 2-0 lead in the first, made it a 4-0 game with two runs in the third and closed out the win with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Jungers pitched the first five innings of the second game and stayed unbeaten at 12-0. She had 10 strikeouts and walked one batter. Freshman Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater worked the last two innings and retired all six batters she faced.

Freshman Bre Tigges of Urbandale paced the Bears at the plate with three hits, including a double. Reilling had a pair of hits, including a double, and freshman Ella Husak of Polk City topped DMACC at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Reilling and freshman Mo Purdy of Des Moines drove in one run apiece.

The DMACC softball team will begin play in Division II of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a doubleheader against Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) March 28 at the DMACC softball diamond. ILCC is 20-9 this season.
