DMACC softball team takes doubleheader from Iowa Western CC

The DMACC softball team ran its winning streak to eight consecutive wins with a pair of victories over Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) March 25 at Des Moines.

 

The Bears, ranked seventh in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), won by scores of 7-3 and 10-2 to improve to 22-3 for the season. DMACC collected 21 hits in the two wins, 11 in the first game and 10 in the second contest, which was called because of the mercy rule after five innings.

 

Sophomores Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf and Hilary Wilson of Solon and freshmen Ella Husak of Polk City and Macee Reilling of Dallas Center had two hits apiece and Caffery and Wilson each drove into runs in DMACC's win in the opener. Wilson belted a home run and the Bears got a double from sophomore Mia Walker of Fonda.

 

DMACC took a 3-0 lead in the second and made it a 6-0 game with three runs in the fifth. The Bears scored their seventh run in the sixth and IWCC got its three runs in the top of the seventh.

 

Freshman Kierra Jungers of Fonda pitched the first five and two-thirds innings and improved to 11-0 with the win. She allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked two. Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee went an inning and a third, allowing three runs on two hits. She struck out three and walked one.

 

Caffery, Husak and freshman Mo Purdy of Des Moines had two hits apiece and sophomore Josie McCuddin of Truro homered and drove in three runs for DMACC in the second game. Caffery and Purdy had two RBIs apiece.

 

The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first and led 3-1 after two innings. They had a 5-2 lead after three innings and closed out the win with five runs in the fifth inning.

 

Freshman Jacki Baas of Bondurant went the distance and notched her eighth win of the season against one loss. She allowed two runs on three hits, struck out four and walked one.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in a doubleheader today at Creston. The Spartans, an NJCAA Division I program, are 10-8 overall and 1-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Division I standings.
