DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader against Marshalltown
  • Sixth-ranked Bears improve to 20-3 for the season

The DMACC softball team ran its record to 20-3 and stretched its winning streak to six consecutive games after sweeping a doubleheader from Marshalltown Community College (MCC) March 22 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

The Bears, ranked sixth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), won by scores of 15-0 and 14-0 and both games were called by the mercy rule after five innings. The last five games in DMACC's six-game winning streak have gone just five innings and the Bears started the streak with an 8-0 win over Allen County Community College (ACCC) in six innings.

 

Freshman Macee Reilling of Dallas Center belted a home run and drove in four runs and sophomore Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf had three hits and three RBIs to propel DMACC past MCC in the opener. The Bears scored six runs in each of the first two innings and closed out the win with two runs in the bottom of the third and one run in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Caffery's three hits included a double and a triple. Freshman Ella Husak of Polk City had two hits and sophomore Mia Walker of Fonda joined Caffery with three RBIs. Extra-base hits also included a double by freshman Erin Ades of Boone.

 

Freshman Jacki Baas of Bondurant pitched the first three innings for DMACC and improved to 7-1 with the win. She allowed one hit, struck out three and walked one. Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee went two innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and a walk.

 

Caffery collected four hits, three singles and a double, and scored three runs in DMACC's win in the second game. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first, made it a 7-0 game with five runs in the third and closed out the wins with seven runs in the fourth.

 

Sophomore Hilary Wilson of Solon had three hits in the win and Ades, Reilling, freshman Mo Purdy of Des Moines and sophomore Mia Trewin of Waukee had two hits apiece. Reilling led the Bears in RBIs with three and Ades, Purdy and Trewin drove in two runs apiece. Reilling's hits included a pair of doubles and Purdy also doubled.

 

Freshman Kierra Jungers of Fonda stayed unbeaten at 10-0 with the win. She threw three innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Freshman Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater pitched one inning, allowing two hits and striking out one and sophomore Ellie Flanagan of Coggon struck out one batter and walked one in one inning in the circle.

 

Caffery's batting average improved to .487 after she went 7-for-7 in the two wins. She ranks third in hitting in Division II of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and leads the conference in stolen bases with 34.

 

The DMACC softball team will play a doubleheader against Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) March 25 at Des Moines. IWCC, an NJCAA Division I program, is 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the ICCAC Division I standings.
