The DMACC softball team improved to 4-0 for the season with a pair of wins in the Southeastern Community College (SCC) Turf Tournament February 17 at West Burlington.

Sophomore Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., threw a one-hitter as the Bears defeated Rock Valley Community College (RVCC) in the first game, 8-0, and DMACC rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth to defeat Black Hawk-Moline Community College (BHMCC), 4-3, in the second game.

The wins came on the heels of wins against Spoon River Community College (SRCC) and State Fair Community College (SFCC) on Feb. 16, giving DMACC a 4-0 record in the tournament. And two of the four wins came against ranked teams as SRCC is ranked 13th in the Division II preseason poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and RVCC is ranked 12th. The poll has DMACC as the seventh best team in NJCAA Division II.

Donahue ran her record to 2-0 in beating RVCC in six innings. She went the distance with 16 strikeouts and one walk in addition to allowing one hit.

Offensively, DMACC took a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third innings and took control of the game with five runs in the fourth and one in the sixth. Sophomore Elle Nelson of Grimes paced the Bears at the plate with four hits, including two doubles, and four runs batted in. Freshman Hilary Wilson of Solon had three hits, including a double, and sophomores Bella Nelson of Gilbert and Kelsey Palmer of Cedar Rapids had two hits apiece. Nelson also doubled in the game as did freshman Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis. Palmer and freshman Breanna Caffery drove in one run apiece.

Caffery, Wilson and freshman Josie McCuddin of Truro had two hits apiece in DMACC's win over BHMCC. The Bears trailed 2-0 after three innings before scoring four times in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. BHMCC tallied its other run in the bottom of the sixth.

Wilson, who had two doubles in the game, drove in a pair of runs and freshman Mia Walker of Fonda and sophomore Hannah Ironside of Swisher drove in one run apiece. Caffery and McCuddin also doubled for the Bears.

Freshman Macy Blomgren of Waukee pitched the first three innings for DMACC, allowing two runs on three hits. She struck out four and walked one. Freshman Maura Chalupa of Muscatine went two innings, striking out one batter and walking three and freshman Elle Flanagan of Coggon pitched one inning, surrendering a run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk and she came away with the win. Sophomore Kinsley Robertson of Tiffin went one inning and earned the save. She gave up one hit.

The DMACC softball team is idle until March 1 to 3 when the Bears travel to Mississippi to face Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC), East Mississippi Community College (EMCC), Northwest Mississippi Community College (NWMCC), Itawamba Community College (ICC) and Jones College (JC). JC is ranked 17th in the NJCAA Division II preseason poll and NWMCC has received votes.
