DMACC softball team takes doubleheader from Clarke JV

The DMACC softball team improved to 25-5 for the season after winning both games of a doubleheader against the Clarke University Junior Varsity March 30 at Dubuque. The Bears took the opener, 13-0, and won the second game, 11-0.

DMACC, ranked sixth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), ran its current winning streak to four games and all four have been shutouts. The Bears have outscored the opposition 53-0 and all four games have been called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Sophomore Emily Ades of Boone drove in three runs and sophomores Sydney Kennedy of Peosta and Maddy Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., drove in two runs apiece in the opener. The Bears' 17 hits included four hits from Ades, three each by freshmen Hannah Ironside of Swisher and Ella Nelson of Grimes and two apiece from Kennedy, Kearns and sophomore Kaylynn Salyars of Muscatine. Extra base hits included doubles from Nelson, Ades, Kearns, Kennedy and Ironside.

Kennedy threw four innings and got her 12th win of the season against two losses. She allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked one. Freshman Lauryn Foudree of West Des Moines went one inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Salyars, sophomore Kendal Clark of Humboldt and freshman Amaya Snyder of Cedar Rapids drove in two runs apiece in the nightcap. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the second and closed out the win with three runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings.  Salyars, Kennedy, Clark and Snyder had two hits apiece in the win, including a pair of doubles by Salyars. Ironside and freshman Bella Nelson of Gilbert also doubled.

Freshman Kinsley Robertson of Tiffin improved to 6-2 with the win. She allowed two hits, struck out five and walked one over three innings. Freshman Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., pitched two innings and allowed one hit. She struck out six of the seven batters she faced.

The DMACC softball team will play doubleheaders against Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 2 and 3 at Estherville. The Bears are 6-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic conference (ICCAC). ILCC is 19-7 overall and 4-4 in the ICCAC.
