DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from MCC
  • DMACC scores 52 runs in 27-7 and 25-5 victories
  • Bears collect 52 hits including 19 extra-base hits
  • Emma Dighton and Ellie Jacobson earn pitching victories

 

The DMACC softball team ran its winning streak to 15 games with a pair of victories over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) April 14 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

The Bears, ranked third in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJACC), won by scores of 27-7 and 25-5 to improve to 36-3 for the season. Both games were called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

 

DMACC collected 52 hits in the two wins including 13 doubles, a triple and five home runs.

 

The Bears took the opener behind a 13-run rally in the third inning. They led 4-2 after the first inning and 9-4 after the second inning. The 13-run rally put them ahead 22-4 and they closed out the win with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Sophomores Abby Husak of Polk City, Jada Collins of Des Moines and Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., led DMACC with four hits apiece including a pair of doubles from Kelley and one from Collins. Sophomore Sami Miller of Mason City and freshman Kendal Clark of Humboldt also doubled in the win and Clark belted two home runs with Collins and freshman Emma Dighton hitting one apiece.

 

Collins came away with six runs batted in, Dighton and Clark had five RBIs apiece, Kelley finished with four and Husak had two.

 

Dighton pitched all five innings and improved to 5-1 with the win. She allowed seven runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked one.

 

DMACC used a 12-run rally in the first inning to come away with the win in the second game. The Bears led 15-2 after the second inning, 21-4 after the third inning and 25-5 after the fourth inning.

 

Dighton and sophomore Layney Loyd of New London paced DMACC with four hits apiece and freshman Sydney Kennedy of Peosta, Collins, Clark and Miller had three hits apiece. Kelley and sophomore Kaylynne Salyars of Muscatine had two hits each.

 

Dighton, Kennedy and Loyd had two doubles apiece and Salyars had a double and a triple. Collins added a home run to the Bears' 27-hit attack.

 

Collins led the Bears in RBIs with four, Kennedy, Dighton, Salyars and Loyd had three apiece and Clark and Kelley each drove in two runs.

 

Sophomore Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt pitched the first three innings and notched her fourth win of the season against one loss. She allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out three. Sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits. She struck out four.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in doubleheaders today and April 16 at Iowa Falls. DMACC leads Division II of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a 14-2 record. ICCC is 26-10 overall 9-3 in the conference.
