DMACC softball team splits doubleheader with Grayson College

The DMACC softball team stretched its winning streak to 14 games with a 9-8 win over Grayson College March 14 at Denison, Texas, but the streak ended with Grayson College's 8-1 win in the second game.

 

The Bears, ranked third in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), are 14-1 for the season. Grayson College is ranked 11th in NJCAA Division I.

 

Freshman Kendal Clark of Humboldt doubled and homered and drove in four runs as DMACC took the opener behind a four-run rally in the top of the seventh. The rally gave the Bears a 9-7 lead and Grayson College closed to 9-8 with a run in the bottom of the inning. DMACC trailed 4-1 after the first inning but scored four times in the top of the second for a 5-4 lead. The Bears trailed 7-5 after five innings.

 

Freshman Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., paced DMACC's 11-hit attack with two singles and a double and drove in three runs. Sophomore Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and Brionna Vasey of Des Moines had two singles apiece.

 

Sophomore Abby Flanagan of Coggon pitched the first three and a third innings for DMACC, allowing six runs on seven hits. She walked two batters. Freshman Emma Dighton of Boone went three and two-thirds innings and improved to 4-0 with the win. She allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two.

 

DMACC was limited to just five hits, including a pair of singles by Kelley, in losing the second game. Grayson College led 5-0 after two innings and 5-1 after five innings before putting the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Sophomore Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt pitched the first three innings for DMACC and fell to 3-1 with the loss. She allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked one. Sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa went two innings and gave up two hits with one strikeout and freshman Sydney Kennedy of Peosta allowed three runs on three hits in one inning in the circle.
