Freshman Molly Jacobsen of Adel tossed a two-hit shutout and sophomore Kenzi Sutton of Adel drove in three runs to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team to an 8-0 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in the championship game of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI-A Softball Tournament May 4 at the DMACC softball diamond.

The win, DMACC's 44th of the season against seven losses, puts the Bears in the NJCAA District G Softball Tournament May 6 to 8 at the DMACC softball diamond. DMACC will face the NJCAA Region 9 champion, Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC), North Platte Community College (NPCC) or Southeast (Neb.) Community College (SECC). The District G champion moves on to the NJCAA Division II Softball Championship May 17 to 20 at Clinton, Miss.

Jacobsen improved to 23-3 nine strikeouts and one walk. The Bears got their freshman pitcher all the runs she needed in the first inning when sophomores Claire Dudek of Urbandale and Kerigan Torres of Des Moines reached on back-to-back singles and came around to score, Dudek on an ICCC error and Torres on a single by freshman Bre Hunter of Boone.

DMACC, ranked fifth in the NJCAA Division II poll, padded its lead in the third when Jacobsen led off with a double, moved to third on an infield grounder by sophomore Megan Rushing of Des Moines and scored on an infield grounder by Dudek. Freshman Bailey Richards of Des Moines, who walked after Rushing's ground out, stole second, took third on Dudek's grounder and scored the second run of the inning on a single by Torres.

Sutton opened the DMACC third with a base hit and eventually scored on Jacobsen's sacrifice fly to make it a 5-0 game and then belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to all but gave the Bears the victory. The game was called because of the mercy rule after ICCC batted in the top of the fifth.

Dudek, Torres and Sutton paced DMACC's nine hit attack with two hits apiece.
