DMACC men's golf team finishes second in district meet; qualifies for national championship

 

The DMACC men's golf team turned in one of its best performances of the spring season in finishing second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) North Central District Championship May 1 and 2 at Lake Panorama Golf Course in Panora.

 

The Bears posted a 54-hole score of 951 and finished four strokes behind the winning total of 947 by Kirkwood Community College (KCC). The tournament was virtually a two-team race after the first 18 holes on May 1. DMACC shot 312 to KCC's 315 and carried a three-stroke lead into the second round, also on May 1. The two teams were close again in DMACC posting a 315 and KCC coming away with a 313 leaving the Bears with a one-stroke lead heading into the final 18 holes on May 2. DMACC shot a 324 in the final round while KCC posted a 319 to come away with the win.

 

DMACC was led by freshman Spencer Clatt of Gilbert. Clatt shot rounds of 79, 77 and 81 on the par 72 layout for a 54-hole total of 237, trying for sixth place in the individual competition. Freshman Calvin McNeeley of Pleasant Hill tied for 11th on rounds of 76, 87, 78 for a 54-hole score of 241.

 

Freshman Kaleb Allen of West Burlington finished in 14th place. He posted scores of 80, 79 and 84 to close at 243, and sophomore Sam Vertanen of Ames tied for 16th at 245. He turned in rounds of 77, 79 and 89.

Sophomore Ethan Gillis of Pickering, Ontario, Canada, did not play the opening round for DMACC and shot rounds of 80 and 81 in the second and third rounds for a 36-hole score of 161 and finished in 52nd place. Freshman Drake Anderson of Sargeant Bluff played the opening round for DMACC and shot a 90.

 

Luke Strako of Southeastern Community College (SECC) took medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 231. He posted scores of 80, 79 and 72.

 

The NJCAA Division II National Championship will be played May 23 to 26 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.
